Cook's Inlet

Sky Watch Friday

Beautiful Summer Day over Cook's Inlet
Anchorage, Alaska, USA
(Click the photo for a full page view)

The famous
Turnagain Arm of Cook Inlet is to the left in the photo.

Turnagain Arm is one of only about 60 bodies of water worldwide to exhibit a tidal bore. The bore may be more than six feet high and travel at 15 miles per hour on high spring tides. Turnagain Arm sees the largest tidal range in United States, with a mean of 30 feet (9.2 m), and the fourth highest in the world, behind Bay of Fundy (11.7m), Ungava Bay (9.75m), and Bristol Channel (9.6m). The ocean's natural 12-hour 25-minute tidal cycle is close to Turnagain Arm's natural resonance frequency, which then reinforces the tide similar to water sloshing in a bathtub. Tidal fluctuations in the main body of Cook Inlet, while not as extreme as the shallow and narrow Turnagain Arm, regularly reach 25 feet (7.6 m) and exhibit currents in excess of 5 knots (9.3 km/h) at full tidal flow. The inlet and its arms have been proposed as a potentially attractive site for the generation of tidal power.

We traveled back and forth along the arm over a dozen times and watched the tidal bore. sometimes the surfers come out and ride the one-time wave as it advances.

Radiant. You almost can't tell that the water and sky are separate.

That is a lovely photograph, but Alaska is a mystery to me - apart from Sarah Palin.

Good photography is actually hard work and experience and I see that here. Well done.

That's interesting stuff Troy and Martha and good that you referred to wikipedia with information about Cook Inlet. Is that James Cook, whose name is used in Australia, in for instance Cooktown?

Troy, I did not know about Tidal Bores, though I did know the rivers flowed backwards out of the Bay of Fundy. I followed the link and learned something new. Amazing photo as always. I've posted Gus' photos from Cave Creek Canyon. I included a link to your post about HDR processing at the end. I was able to increase the color saturation in a couple of the photos using Picture Project by going beyond the automatic enhancement and sliding the color bar further until the colors looked right to me. Tell me what you think. The 2 cliff pics and the blue night we the most manipulated.

I never knew that was what that phenomenon is called, though I have walked with an incoming tide at a place called Tidal River on Wilsons Promontory in Victoria.

Lovely photo too - the sky is very deep and blue.

Your photographs are wonderful! I am so glad I joined Skywatch and found your site. Your commentaries are interesting too. I have seen the Severn Bore (the one that goes up from the Bristol Channel) and they surf that too, it's pretty amazing. Hope the weekend weather lets you get some more of these fantastic pics:-)

Was this taken out at the end of the land and the start of the runway, that little park? Looks so familiar. We sat out there and watched final approach of the BIG planes and enjoyed the sun. Turnagain Arm is the best!! I've been up there seven times now, always go down the arm. I've seen the bore tide. Did you get out to Portage Valley? Spectacular stuff. I really enjoy your photos.
