Hell’s Gate

Bridges Between

Air Bridge & Foot Bridge
(Remember to click on the photos to get close)

On June 26, 1808 the explorer Simon Fraser passed along these cliff on a series of bridges and ladders built by the Thompson Indians.

Hell’s Gate is the narrowest point on the Fraser River.

The route of the present Tans-Canada Highway through the Fraser Canyon follows what was originally a fur brigade trail. It became a wagon road in 1863 and after 1925 it was passable by automobile.

Fraser River Narrows

This canyon has been traveled by foot, boat, mule, horse, wagon, steam tractor, auto, railroad and even camel.

Bridge across the River

Hells Gate Airtram takes visitors 500 ft. down and across the Fraser River.

Oh, Hell's Gate looks like the right name! But the airtram ride must be truly magnificent.

Thanks for your visit earlier.

Nice shots.

I must say that it deserves its name. Building that narrow bridge must have been a harrowing experience indeed.

I think I would have stuck with the tramway...

Wow I don't think I've ever seen nor even heard of an Air Tram before. I presume it works a bit like a Transporter Bridge.

We go by Hell's Gate every time we drive down to the Fraser Valley and Vancouver to visit friends and family. I haven't been on the actual tram since I was a kid. One of those things to do/explore in ones own area ... that one never gets around to.

Just got home from our trip to the Tetons. IT WAS GREAT! And, here I am keeping up with yours. How long have you been out and when do you have to come home.

The river looks wicked going through the gate. Traveling through there must have been difficult back in Simon fraser's time. Not a place for the faint hearted. Great photos of the bridge and tram.

Thanks for your comments on my bridge and Halfdome photo. I took photos about every five minutes that afternoon from full sun to dusk. The one I like best is my masthead.

Woah! I'm not sure if I would have the courage to cross that bridge after looking at your photo! Hell's Gate indeed....

Great pictures and great post. I think I would have a slight problem with the 500' height of the airtram. I've become better in my old age about heights, but there are still some instances when I get vertigo. I'm feeling like that airtram might be one of those instances, especially if the wind was blowing.

Eek! That's tested my dislike of bridges to the full!

Great photos - as are the roses you told me about over at my place :)
