Have you ever been in a place where the sky just looked 'bigger' than normal. This was one such place. A glaciated valley in Denali National Park in Alaska, USA. This looks better enlarged, but still doesn't feel like being there.
For the Geologist - Notice the directional side valleys and rounded shape of the main valley. It's a couple of miles over to the far side.
For the Naturalist - Notice the Golden Grizzly on the far slopes (a mile or more away). We saw the bear in the spotting scope, but now I can't find him in the photo. You will just have to use your imagination.
I have only been a few places where I remember the sky looking larger than life. Montana and West Texas to name a couple.
It's curious, but out on the Ocean, the sky doesn't seem large. I guess it's because the Ocean seems so large.
Where have you experienced the sky seeming larger than life?

I live in West Texas and have never been anyplace that the sky looks as large, but I have not been to Alaska either!
I really enjoy looking at your pictures and traveling through your blog.
That was a great park and probably the biggest sky I have ever seen also. Can I imagine two grizzly bears over yonder?
Such an interesting valley and the colors!!! I think it is the valley itself that magnifies the sky.
I think I would have felt at home in Alaska. For a big sky - Try Lofoten, Norway.
Sometimes I get that feeling when I am in my own driveway and the panoramic view offers high ceilinged clouds, and I just crane my neck and take it all in!
beautiful and peace place
I hope have time to stop at my SWF post : in here and here Thanks
What a beautiful landscape. A very great shot:)
Petunia's SWF post
what a great photo of a beautiful place. Man I wish I could see a grizzly
One of my fave this week! Amazing that beauty is! Love the green valley and those skies! TFS~Mine is HERE.Thanks! Happy SWF!
Definitely a big sky there. I think the Prairies (like Saskatchewan and eastern Alberta) have big, big skies too. ;-)Happy Sky Watch Friday!
What a beautiful landscape. Good shot.
Now that's a big sky and a great shot. Have a super weekend.
Cheers
Great skywatch photo.Love the great sky.
Beautiful shot. Denali is in my dream destination list. I trust you'll be sharing more pics from there?
Troy: Wow, bigger than life on the view.
what a beautiful landscape...
Out here in the desert the sky is pretty big :)
The sky does look bigger out west than it does here in the midwest. I like to call that huge expanse of sky with big puffy clouds an N.C. Wyeth sky! ;)
Beautiful capture! I love the colors of land and sky. Happy SWF!
Beautiful picture. One songtitle comes to my mind: "Over the hills and far away" by Gary Moore :-)
Wow it must be amazing to see parts of Alaska in person. I like it...
Beautiful Sky Watch, Troy & Martha. I will just imagine that I can see the Grizzly Bear on the far hill.
The 'biggest' and most empty sky I've ever seen was during a drive through central Wyoming. Traveling with me was my sister, who remarked that if "Aliens" ever were to visit Earth, this was no doubt where they would come!
That's a wonderful shot. I've always wanted to go to Denali but have never been. Your shot at least gives me a taste of it.
Yep. Texas skies!
Great landscape!
Cheers, Klaus
Always in the hills. The sky is larger than life because it always comes to meet the hills - sometimes literally!
This is a beautiful shot. I can see the curve of the basin. Great stuff.
Excellent view! Alaska has been on my mind a lot the last couple days... great place!!
Really pretty. Brings back memories. Pappy
The landscape reminds of a wave in the ocean! Happy SWF!
Troy, I am always amazed by the colors and light in your Alaksa photos. Look at the golds and purples on the far slope! What makes those colors?
As for the sky, it always seems bigger to me in the west than it does in the east. Elevation must have something to do with it, though, because the sky seems bigger and more open and the land seems lifted up when I am in Aroostook County, ME, but it feels distant and cold when I am in Connecticut or Massachusetts. The skies in Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and AZ all seem bigger and wider to me. I really like the skies and the topagraphy of the intermountain west.
What a great photo! Loved the details in it! Well done!
The sky is seen to be even larger I think due to the contour lines on the foothills leading our view upward. Lovely! Majestic!
Wow - your sky (and foreground) are stunning. My farm sky often seems larger than life. But I haven't stopped being aware of it - and I hope I never do.
A beautiful shot! I like it:)
Wow that is a gorgeous view. I love the unique curves of the mountains in the back ground. It also has beautiful colors.
*hugs*
Scotland. We lived in St Andrews, and the beaches sweeps round. On a summer's night the sky was so overpowering, wide and never ending.Good question. Wonderful shot
the green looks so lush.
I find some North Dakota and New Mexico skies larger than life. But this photo is spectacular. I'm sure it doesn't show the vastness you saw, but it does a good job of depicting "vast." And the colors in it are spectacular.
Lovely photo although even enlarged my eyes can no longger detect the grizzly...I have an imagination though!
Beautiful golden mean division and the gold at the foot of the escarpment is magical, especially against the conifers.
Love the shot, the sky does look big even in the photo, I've noticed that here in Saskatchewan as well, probably because there is nothing else being so flat here, lol, the sky seems to go on forever
this is soooo goood! man! I love it!
This is an amazing place! Great photo and information.
Thanks for sharing the BIG SKY of Denali ... it's beautiful. My SWF is at Sacred Ruminations.
Hugs and blessings,
Beautiful. I remember thinking that about the sky in North Dakota.
Oh my i think this is fabulous with the colors.
Nice picture - lovely landscape. My experience has been Montana & Texas. The sky just goes on and on. Yes, I think I can see the bear - at least in my minds eye.
Marvelous field!
Lovely landscape!
Have a nice days!

Another great phot from your Alaska trip! I think the open expanse of the valley adds to the "big" sky effect. I have experienced similar big skies flying out of Denver into thunderstorms approaching from the east.
Love your skywatch today. I feel very small under that big sky:)
I gotta tell you...... on a small ship in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight....... the sky can seem pretty big.
Really nice shot. And I'm still looking for the bear. LOL
fantastic landscape shot. perfect for swf.
There is a wonderful feeling of being part of the universe when the sky seems so huge! Gorgeous landscape!
Splendid.
the sky doesnt look big in the urban areas but only in the rural areas..
Beautiful valley and photo. Lovely pick for SWF! :) Have a great weekend.
Everything is bigger in Texas. :)
Why, I hear the grasshoppers can carry a person around! At least my uncle assures me of that every time he's up here in PA. :)
wow that is just like somebody painted in it. Love the landscape shot...TC
Open spaces like this make me feel as if I am in a Wyeth painting ...

Wow! Surely a beautiful painting!!!
Sorry to have dropped by so late, but its still Friday from my part of the globe. Visiting from Vienna Daily.
This photo just makes me feel like I stepped into a slice of heaven -always enjoy your landscape photos.
I think the biggest sky I've seen is out in an open field in Northern Michigan and looking up at endless stars.
Breathtaking!!! I am jealous = )
absolutely breathtaking!
Wow~ Troy and Martha~what a beautiful sky watch capture! The sky does seem larger than life..stunning...of course its Texas...home of the Dallas Cowboys!:D Are you ready for some Football..?! (I am!):)

That photo really makes me want to go and see it for myself. The first time I was in the Midwest, I remember driving across open corn country in southern Indiana. I had never visited someplace that was very flat and treeless like that. I remember realizing for the first time that there was an absolute limit to how flat terrain could be. The sky seemed HUGE.
Greetings from Juneau, Alaska!
Thanks for visiting Juneau Daily Photo. I'm so glad that you got to experience B.C., the Yukon, and Alaska. It's such a spectacular drive. Thanks for sharing your adventures.:)
Oh wow, just beautiful.
I don't knw, I think that beach skies are big. Of course, I live near the edge of "Big Sky Country" so maybe I just see all skies as big.
hmmmm....
You've got "Louis" thinking...
He's going to step out on his balcony now and compare the Bay and the sky...
Very pretty sky!
As usual, a beautiful photograph of a wonderful area!

Well, you're right about the sky being "larger than life"...
Reminds me of a trip I made to Montana one year -- I had heard much about "big sky" Montana -- and everything I heard turned out to be true...
